What BMI measures

Body Mass Index compares body weight with height squared. It is a quick population-level screening reference, not a direct measurement of body fat or health.

How to interpret the number

Adult BMI categories provide broad context for the result. They can be useful as one starting point, but an individual number should be considered alongside health history, body composition, waist measurements, and changes over time.

What BMI does not show

BMI cannot distinguish muscle, fat, bone, or fluid. People with substantial muscularity may receive a higher result without having the body-fat level the category might imply, while people with the same BMI can have different body compositions.

How FitCalc calculates BMI

FitCalc converts the entered measurements to kilograms and metres, then divides weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. The result is educational and does not diagnose a medical condition.
